Joseph M. Fernando is In-Country Co-Coordinator (ICC) responsible for the Malaysian component of Tracking Development. He is an associate professor with the Department of History in the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur which he joined in 2000. He obtained his PhD in History from Royal Holloway College, University of London, in 1995. He previously worked as a journalist for two newspapers in Malaysia: The Star (1982-1988) and The Sun (1996-2000). His main research areas are Malaysian political and constitutional history. He also has a broader research interest in Malaysian economic and social issues. His other research interests include nationalism, colonialism in Southeast Asia, the modern history of Southeast Asia, ASEAN, Southeast Asian regional security and the media in Malaysia.
